Why “Fawlty”?

Why “Fawlty”? Firstly, it’s a respectful, oblique reference to Fawlty Towers; the sensational comedic series created by John Cleese and his wife Connie Booth where hospitality and hostility are competing partners. It also rhymes with “Faulty”’ which conveys dysfunctionality. Towers and Powers also rhyme. We live in a world where those invested with the responsibility of our care, consistently betray us, by one mechanism or another. Be it corruption, malevolence, or incompetence, the end result is pretty much the same. Distress is everywhere.

Matt Jelicich - Portfolio

Matt Jelicich, prime lyricist for this contemporary protest song has no musical credentials. He can’t read music, perform it or sing. Born in 1944, the fact he was by nature, highly creative meant little in those cold, hard years following WWII where simple survival was more than enough. Learning how to work and earn were the prime drivers.

Which is what he did. Success in corporate and private enterprises helped feed the family. His poetic and painting proclivities were reserved for his very few private, contemplative, moments. Never-the-less, over several decades he accumulated a vast repository of written material he refers to as “scribblings”. This song is the outcome of a small bed of phrases coined in the late 60’s which, he suddenly realised during the World Wide Covid Pandemic in 2019/20, related to the upending world around us.

Working together with Danny Lopez, a very accomplished musician and producer they transformed his original material into the song “Winter of Discontent” which this …… is showcasing.

Meant to be, because of his age, a Bucket List achievement it’s now not quite just that. Other original materials are being worked on. And, should he be around long enough 😉, one or two more, totally different expressions of experience are set to see the light of the day.

As you’ve gathered from the above. This is not a ‘new, high potential possible star of the future’ advent. It’s Swan Song material from a creative for whom circumstance dictated a different trajectory. He’s done that with few regrets and now is pleased, in all humility, to present proof that all ‘fossils’ are not yet fixed in stone 😉.
